USCIS Announcement on Gathering Social Media Information in Immigration

On March 5, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a 60-day public comment period for a proposed information collection initiative. This initiative aims to gather social media identifiers, such as usernames or handles, along with the corresponding platform names, from individuals applying for immigration benefits. The primary objectives of collecting this information are to enhance identity verification processes and to bolster national security and public safety screening measures. USCIS believes that incorporating social media data into their vetting procedures will provide a more comprehensive understanding of applicants, thereby aiding in the detection of potential security threats.
